Text 19 Apr civilizations

are just the criss-crossing of many lines — each one a woman, man, child — which together weave a crowded and nearly illegible tapestry. Thus when we speak of Roman civilization, or French, or Chinese, we are in fact speaking of this accumulation of lives interlaced by the relations of dependence, affection, domination, fraud, commerce and friendship that make up the quotidian round of any society.
